Workers held in Shoroya Nuevo were released

After reaching agreements in the midst of a sustained dialogue process between Petroperú and the Shoroya Nuevo community of the Morona district of the Loreto region, the four workers who had been detained since last October 24 regained their freedom.

After their release, the workers were evacuated from Station 5 of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), to undergo a medical evaluation since their health has deteriorated during their detention.

Petroperú personnel and their contractor had entered the area together with representatives of the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) to supervise the area of the contingency produced at km 177 of the ONP North Branch, three kilometers from the Shoroya community. New, when community leaders did not allow them free movement and held them against their will, violating their basic rights. Shoroya Nuevo is part of the Chapra Autonomous Territorial Government organization (GTACH).

It should be remembered that, within the framework of the dialogue with the indigenous organizations, Petroperú signed an act on 10.13.2022 with the representatives of GTACH, the native communities and their advisors in the city of Lima, agreements that it has been complying with. For its part, GTACH undertook on that date to guarantee the execution of the contingency care work as of October 20, work that unfortunately could not be started due to this force measure.

Given the recent release of its workers, Petroperú reiterates its commitment to the communities to attend to the contingency in a responsible manner and report on activities in a transparent manner, as it has been doing to date. Likewise, it informs that it hopes to restart the works for the collection of crude oil as soon as possible, always in coordination with the native communities and their authorities.
