Talara Refinery celebrates its anniversary: 106 years producing high quality fuels

2023 is already a historic year for Petroperú, since in the following weeks the New Talara Refinery (NRT) will begin full operation, contributing to the country's energy security. This was stated by the president of the company's board of directors, engineer Pedro Chira Fernández, during the commemorative activities for the 106th anniversary of the Talara Refinery, an emblematic industrial operation, a pioneer in crude oil refining in the country that has remained at the forefront technology to become one of the most modern in America. This refinery, as ought to be remembered, began operations on July 2, 1917 and since 1969 it has been part of Petroperú.

In the ceremony, where the general manager, Cristina Fung and the Talara Refinery manager, Gaspar Díaz, participated; Chira Fernández recalled that -as part of the gradual and progressive startup process- the NRT has already produced more than three million barrels of low sulfur diesel with the highest quality standards.

Along the same lines, he recalled that the necessary tests are currently being carried out to start up the last two process units, which will generate greater profitability for the company by allowing up to 30% more environmentally friendly fuels to be obtained.

He also pointed out that, as part of its strategic objectives, Petroperú continues its vertical integration process, seeking to participate in the operation of the northwestern oil blocks, as it has been doing since December 2021 to date in Lot I of Talara, maintaining optimal and sustained production of oil and gas.

In this regard, he indicated that Petroperú has reiterated its interest in participating in the operation of the northwest oil blocks, whose production historically forms part of the raw material for the production of fuels in the NRT. "As a company we are prepared to participate in the operation of these batches and integrate them into our refining complex," he added.

At another time, he highlighted the commitment of the professionals and technicians who have been working on the start-up process of the NRT, a modern industrial complex that has the capacity to process up to 95,000 barrels of oil per day for the production of fuels such as diesel, gasoline, A1 turbo, LPG, among others.

Petroperú's modern refining complex, with high technology and world-class complexity, has 16 process units and five packages of auxiliary units and complementary services, two liquid cargo docks, 125 storage tanks and a modern accredited laboratory that provides internationally valid results.
