Talara fishermen receive GPS equipment to optimize their work tasks

Artisanal fishermen from the San Pedro de Talara port received GPS equipment kits as part of the "Technical assistance and training project for the use of technological support and geolocation tools", which is executed by Petroperú together with its strategic partners: the National Program of Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture (PNIPA), MET Peru and the Guild of Artisanal Fishermen of the Port of San Pedro.

This training program directly benefited 56 artisanal fishermen and their families; and indirectly to more than 1,200 unionized and non-unionized workers who work at the San Pedro Artisanal Fishing Landing, which included technical assistance and implementation of six boats with geolocation equipment (echosounders with GPS), as well as the strengthening of the fishermen's union to be able to disseminate and replicate the technical information to other members.

The echo sounders with GPS are implemented with the nautical chart of the Peruvian sea, which will allow seamen to increase their productivity and strengthen the processes related to safety on board, since it will help them to have more precise and safe routes, also improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their fishing operations.

It is important to specify that the Project contemplates a comprehensive methodology that considers not only the delivery of these modern tools, but also training and technical assistance for the conditioning of their vessels, installation of equipment and the use of the technology granted.

The activity was carried out within the framework of the PNIPA Competitive Fund of the Ministry of Production, through which the World Bank grants financing for the implementation of competitive development projects for artisanal fishing and aquaculture. Petroperú participates as a collaborating entity in Talara, adding to date five projects executed with PNIPA.

Likewise, these initiatives are part of the "Fishing with a Future” Program, which Petroperú has been implementing since 2017, which includes projects carried out in partnership with other institutions. In this way, the company reaffirms its commitment to support the economic sectors of Talara, specifically with artisanal fishing, coordinating between the State and the private sector for the benefit of the populations in its area of influence.
