Talara fishermen benefit from the implementation of innovative projects

With great success, the three innovative projects that, at the initiative of PETROPERU, implemented the National Program for Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture (PNIPA) of the Ministry of Production, in a strategic alliance with the San Pedro Artisanal Fishermen Guild, the Antenor Private University. Orrego (UPAO) and Management Engineering and Technology Services (MET PERU).

The projects have been helping to improve the safety of the Talara artisanal fishermen's work, as well as to optimize the process of extraction of marine resources and the generation of new business units, for the benefit of their families and their community.

One of the projects was aimed at improving the extraction process, with the adoption and application of safe fishing knowledge. Through this initiative, the risk factors of artisanal fishing were identified, analyzed and managed, through training and technical assistance on health and safety issues. As part of the closure of this project, five vessels with safety equipment were implemented and fishing safety clothing kits were delivered, depending on the type of vessel.

Another project was aimed at improving the processes of extraction and commercialization of marine resources through the application of innovations in cold systems. In this way, the fishermen were advised not to break the cold chain of the products and obtain a greater economic return with this ancestral activity. The project culminated in the installation of seven isothermal stainless-steel boxes in the artisanal vessels of the same number of Talara fishermen who had a prominent participation in this project.

The third project culminated in the implementation of eight of the projects developed in the workshops aimed at optimizing the marketing of marine products. This project was aimed at sensitizing seafarers about the need and importance of working as partners and receiving commercial assistance to carry out undertakings in the fishing sector.

It is important to specify that the three projects were carried out simultaneously in a period of six months and had a social investment of up to S/ 380,790.00, of which 20% was covered by the state company, in its capacity as collaborating entity. 80% of the remaining budget came from World Bank funds, through PNIPA.

This initiative shows the permanent support of the state oil company destined to make viable various development, technology and innovation projects, for the benefit of its interest groups; as part of its articulating role between the sectors of the state and populations in the area of influence of PETROPERU. In this sense, and as part of its Social Management Plan, the formalization of the Talara Artisanal Fishermen's Guild is promoted.
