Talara fishermen are trained in geolocation tools
Petroperú together with its strategic partners: the National Program for Innovation in Fisheries and Aquaculture (PNIPA), MET Peru and the Guild of Artisanal Fishermen of the Port of San Pedro, began the technical assistance and training project for the use of technological support tools and geolocation in the work of the artisanal fishermen of Talara, in order to contribute to the safety of their work.
The project, which will run for eight months, will directly benefit 40 artisanal fishermen and their families; and indirectly to more than 1,200 unionized and non-unionized workers who work at the San Pedro Artisanal Fishing Landing.
"We want fishermen to have the knowledge, tools and devices that allow them to go out to their tasks safely," said Stephanie Villanueva, general coordinator of the Geolocation Project of the company MET Peru, in charge of executing the intervention.
For his part, the president of the Artisanal Fishermen's Guild of San Pedro Talara, Sixto Panta, invoked the maximum participation of the fishermen, valuing the knowledge that will be provided, since the best evaluated participants will be selected so that their boats are implemented with equipment of geolocation.
In addition to training, the project contemplates the implementation of five vessels with geolocation equipment (echo sounders with GPS) and personalized technical assistance to teach the use of the implemented tools.
This initiative is part of the competitive funds program of the PNIPA 2022 edition, of the Ministry of Production, through which the World Bank grants financing for the implementation of competitive development projects for artisanal fishing and aquaculture. Petroperú participates as a collaborating entity in Talara, adding to date six projects executed with PNIPA.
In this way, and in line with its Social Management plan, Petroperú reaffirms its commitment to support the economic sectors of Talara, specifically with artisanal fishing, coordinating between the State and the private sector for the benefit of the populations in its area of influence.
