Settlers retain workers from the Morona Station due to discrepancies with electoral process

PETROPERU addresses the public opinion to report the following:

  1. On November 17, at 8:45 p.m., a group of 50 settlers, led by Apus from nearby communities, arrived at the Morona Station of the North Peruvian Pipeline, demanding an immediate halt to their activities. They warned that otherwise the population that is outside the facility will radicalize its measures of force.
  2. These people reiterated their disagreement with the election results of last October 7 in the district of Morona, arguing that there are irregular actions by the winning political group.
  3. To date, 20 workers have been retained, 16 from contractor companies and four from PETROPERU, some of them have needed medical attention due to complications with their health.
  4. The Morona Station remains without electric power and the generators can only be turned on for a short time to carry out the telephone coordination demanded by the demonstrators.
  5. So far 30 more people have joined the protest, adding 80 residents, some of them armed, who are waiting for the National Elections Jury to issue a statement today, otherwise they would take more radical actions, threatening to cut the pipeline that is operative.
  6. PETROPERU has reported this situation and has transmitted the demands of this group to the national authorities. At the same time, a line of constant dialogue with the aforementioned leaders has been maintained, unfortunately without results.
  7. It should be noted that the prosecutor of San Lorenzo, guarded by four members of the National Police, is at the Morona Station, mediating with the picketers so that they can withdraw their protest and allow the evacuation of people at risk.
  8. PETROPERU urges the residents to put aside their violent attitude, since they are endangering the life and health of the workers, as well as the infrastructure of the North Peruvian Pipeline.
