Petroperú urges residents to allow new environmental contingency to be addressed

On Monday, May 15, Petroperú learned of a new environmental event at kilometer 358+835 of Section II of the North Peruian Pipeline (ONP), located in the Nieva district, Bagua province of the Amazonas region.

With the information obtained, the company immediately activated the Contingency Plan, displacing its own personnel and contractors with the respective materials and equipment to carry out the first response tasks, however, the residents of the Tundusa community oppose the placement of barriers and the installation of a clamp to contain the leak of crude oil.

Faced with this situation, Petroperú notified the corresponding authorities of the facts so that they intercede with the residents and be allowed to carry out activities to prevent the oil from spreading to other areas, putting neighboring communities at risk.

It should be noted that Section II has been stopped since June 7, 2022, due to low crude oil inventories at Station 5 and due to the stoppage of pumping due to contingencies that occurred in Section I.

Petroperú informed the competent authorities, such as the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA), the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin), the National Police of Peru and the Specialized Prosecutor for Environmental Matters (FEMA) of Bagua for the corresponding fiscal verification to be made in order to determine the causes of this contingency. In addition, it makes the respective criminal complaint for the risk to which the community is exposed by prohibiting the event from being attended to in a timely manner.

It should be noted that, in recent years, the ONP has suffered a series of attacks by third parties not yet identified. So far in 2023 alone, three intentional cuts have been registered in the proximity of km 390+210, km 399+861 and km 400+818 of Section II.
