PETROPERU supports the progress of the Awajún Wampis people

PETROPERU signed today an Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement with the association Nacion Awajún Wampis (NAW Peru) in which a framework is established for the implementation of programs or activities that promote social peace, development and strengthening of identity, leadership and identification of opportunities for productive projects in charter communities of NAW Peru and those adjacent to the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP).

The document was signed by Mr. Francisco Shajian, President of NAW Peru and the President of the Board of PETROPERU, Eng James Atkins Lerggios and has as scope the communities between Station 5 and Station 7 of Section II of the ONP. NAW Peru associated 13 federations and 192 communities in the Amazon region.

Atkins reiterated the open door policy and pledged to "work shoulder to shoulder for the well-being of the communities and our operations." He stressed that "PETROPERU is the company of all Peruvians" and stressed that the agreement shows that the industry can coexist with the communities.

Shajian, for his part, valued the dialogue between business and community and thanked "the understanding and good will [of PETROPERU], because when there is good faith, everything can be done".

The Agreement establishes the strengthening of the formalization of the communities, the updating of their membership registers, their geographical delimitation, the implementation of civil registration programs and DNI - jointly with RENIEC - and the articulation of a Manual of Communal Administration with the competent institutions of the State with an intercultural design.

In addition, a leadership program for community presidents and leaders will be outlined and implemented in a participatory manner to improve their management and relationship skills with the different levels of the State. Two profiles of productive public investment will also be designed based on the identification of ecological zones, marketing logistics corridors and productive projects.

The agreement reaffirms the continuation of the Early Clearing and Early Warning Program that provides sustainable employment and other benefits, as well as the maintenance of the participatory environmental monitoring program, updating training for environmental monitors.

This agreement is part of the process of strengthening PETROPERU's relations with the neighboring communities of the ONP, whose objective is to maintain and reinforce mutual trust under the policy called "The path we want".
