Petroperú strengthens coastal defenses in the North Peruvian Pipeline after torrential rains
After completing intense maintenance work, Petroperú managed to restore the right of way of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP) in the Sectors of Section II affected by the torrential rains recorded in March, in the province of Jaén, department of Cajamarca, leaving this sector in optimal conditions for an upcoming restart of the hydrocarbon transport activities by the ONP.
The recorded rains increased the flow of the Chamaya River, eroding its channel in an accelerated manner, causing the loss of the ONP's right of way and leaving the pipeline that runs through the area exposed to high risk.
These works were carried out in seven sectors of Section II of the ONP and consist of the construction of riverside defenses in the Chamaya River, through castles and recovery of the right of way through which the pipeline passes.
In the Km 563 + 300 where the pipe was completely exposed, a solid 753m river defense was raised with castling, flint and filling material, in addition to the construction of a base terrace on the crown of the castling, which allowed to divert the waters and protect the eroded slope.
The restoration of the right of way was also achieved in Kms 575, 576 and 576.6 through the use of appropriate material and the construction of defenses with placed rock; which has allowed to recover the eroded strip, safeguard the right of way and, above all, protect the integrity of the pipeline, exposed to the impact of water. In addition, a 5-level reinforced wall (Terramesh) was erected at Km 577.2. The first two were built of concrete and the last three of rock, to strengthen the terrain and that can withstand natural events of great magnitude.
These works will be extended in Section II with the protection and reinforcement of the riverine defenses, construction of dams and other actions that allow to preserve the right of way and the integrity of the pipeline of the ONP; which will guarantee the service of transport of hydrocarbons in a safe way.
At the moment, the service of transport of hydrocarbons by the ONP is paralyzed, due to the repair works of the pipeline that are developed in Tranche I (Loreto region) due to the more than 50 intentional cuts that occurred by third parties, not yet identified, so far this year.
However, Petroperú complies with the maintenance activities in Section II, assuming with responsibility its role of supplying fuel to the national territory, and of maintaining a policy of continuous improvement for the benefit of the country.
