PETROPERÚ reinforces rivershore defenses in Piura and Cajamarca

As preparation actions in the presence of the El Niño Phenomenon.

The construction of riverine defenses forms the Contingency Plan of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), launched in the face of the effects of the El Niño Phenomenon, forecast for this summer and which seek to protect the integrity of workers, contractors and surrounding communities; as well as the facilities that are part of the heritage of PETROPERÚ and the country.

Thus, as scheduled, in September 2023 work began on the reinforcement of the riverside defenses of the Huancabamba River, in Piura and Cajamarca; as well as the Tasajeras and Piquijaca streams, adjacent to the industrial zone of Station 9, in Piura. These works reach an overall progress of 75%, and it is estimated that they will be completed in the coming weeks.

These tasks consist of the transport, placement and accommodation on the riverbank, forming a castling that allows protecting the facilities in the event of an imminent increase in the river's flow and streams, due to the effect of the rains.

In addition, simultaneously, the channels of the Huancabamba River and both streams are cleaned. In the case of the aforementioned river, both the defenses built and the cleaning of the channel have expanded its hydraulic capacity, which contributes to reducing the risk of damage to the existing metal bridge due to the dragging of trunks and palisades that occur with the large avenues, preventing them from being retained in their passage under the bridge. This, taking into account that it is the only access from the Fernando Belaúnde Terry road to the industrial area of Station 9 and to various population centers, located on the right bank of the river.

It is worth noting that for the development of this work, the relevant coordination is carried out with the neighboring population and their local authorities, in line with Disaster Risk Management and in compliance with Law No. 29664 – Law of the National Disaster Risk Management System - SINAGRED, which seeks to address the probability of extreme events due to intense rains.
