Petroperú regrets events that occurred in Cuninico and reiterates its call for dialogue
Petroperú regrets the confrontation that occurred early today in the native community of Cuninico, district of Urarinas (Loreto), which has occurred between the residents of the native community who have adopted the forceful measure that prevents free transit through the Marañón River and the owners of the vessels that are prevented from navigating that route.
Likewise, it reiterates its call for dialogue as the main tool to find alternatives that allow meeting the needs and expectations of the population and continue with the cleaning and recovery of hydrocarbons in the area of impact of the environmental contingency caused by an intentional cut in kilometer 42 of the North Peruvian Pipeline on 09.16.2022, as well as the attention of medical campaigns, water sampling and the solidarity delivery of water and food packs for the population.
As recalled, after becoming aware of the intentional cut that caused the spill, Petroperú immediately activated the Contingency Plan, plugging the pipeline and making significant progress in the initial cleanup on the banks of the Marañón River. However, it has not been able to do the same in the Cuninico River, due to the blockade that began on 09.23.2022, exercised as a forceful measure that prevents the entry of personnel and equipment to continue with the scheduled work.
Similarly, in a supportive and preventive manner, on 09.22.2022, the first supply of water and food was delivered to the native community of Cuninico, the same that has not been able to continue due to the blockade of river traffic.
Petroperú has reported the blockade of the Cuninico River to the supervisory entities and competent authorities in order to join efforts and reach agreements that allow the work to be restarted and avoid further damage to the communities and the quality of the ecosystems in the area.
