PETROPERÚ needs to attend to contingency due to a new pipe cut at km 54 of the Norperuano Pipeline
After the last 32 cuts caused in the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), these continue, having occurred a new one at kilometer 54, in the territory of the Nueva Alianza community, Urarinas district, Loreto province and region. Although PETROPERÚ closed the pipeline and placed barriers containing the crude oil in the containment channel, these first response actions, necessary to avoid affecting natural water sources, cannot continue due to the refusal of the communal authorities.
This situation is of great concern to PETROPERÚ since, although the crude oil is contained in the flotation/containment channel, there are currently rains in the area that could cause hydrocarbon remains to flow towards the Zavaloyacu creek, a tributary of the Marañón River, so it is necessary to maintain permanent supervision of the containment barriers, but these tasks cannot be carried out because the community does not give authorization to enter their territory.
In compliance with its Social Management Policy, PETROPERÚ maintains a permanent dialogue with the communities neighboring its facilities, where the population is informed about the work carried out in environmental contingencies.
In this sense, it urges the communal authorities to allow the corresponding work to continue and not to expose the inhabitants and the natural environment to unnecessary and punishable risks, and also to guarantee the integrity of the personnel in charge of the work.
