PETROPERÚ managed to protect the areas affected in the pipeline of the North Peruvian Pipeline as a result of recent attacks

After the latest attack on the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP) which, in an unprecedented event, was the victim of multiple cuts to the pipeline, generating an environmental contingency in the area of kilometer 67, in the Urarinas district, Loreto region, PETROPERÚ managed to protect provisionally all affected areas by placing seven metal staples in the tube.

Initially, the existence of 25 cuts to the pipeline was reported, however, during the execution of the first response works that are part of the Contingency Plan, the personnel detected seven additional cuts, resulting in a total of 32. It is necessary to indicate that the crude was contained in the containment channel of the ONP.

The attack was verified by the police personnel who went to the area in response to the complaint filed by PETROPERÚ, as stated in the Police Verification Act of July 2 last. Representatives from the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) and the Supervisory Agency for Investment in Energy and Mining (OSINERGMIN) also participated in the supervision.

In the next few days, the Specialized Prosecutor for Environmental Matters of Iquitos, where the complaint was filed for the crime of environmental contamination, will schedule their entry into the area. Meanwhile, the Loreto - Nauta Provincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office is carrying out the investigations corresponding to the complaint filed for the crime of aggravated damages.

Future works

The works will continue with the final repair of the pipe, for which the hiring of specialized companies is required.

Likewise, cleaning and remediation work will be carried out by companies with experience in such work. For the development of these activities and that they are not interrupted, it is necessary to guarantee security in the area.

In this sense, PETROPERÚ urges the authorities and security forces to reinforce the security of the ONP as it is a National Critical Asset, to contribute to its operation as soon as possible for the benefit of the communities, the environment and the development of the country.
