PETROPERÚ maintains willingness to dialogue with the Chapis community

In compliance with the agreement made with the representatives of the Chapis Community on the past December 10, PETROPERU issued several letters for them to designate their representatives and participate in the condition of overseers in the hiring process of the company that will execute the environmental remediation at Km 221 of the North Branch Pipeline (ORN) of the ONP, where on November 7 there was an upwell of crude.

Given the lack of response by the Community, and with the intention of maintaining the transparency of the hiring process, a meeting was scheduled to report about the process, event which took place the past January 10 at Station 5 of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP).

The meeting had the participation of the Community Apu, Mr. Isaac Yampis, his advisor Mr. Ismael Perez and the Leaders of the 5 annexes of said Community. Representatives of PETROPERU informed that the process for selecting the company that will remediate the area is being done in Lima in the scheduled dates and it was confirmed that the bases of the process included the commitments made by PETROPERU in the agreement of the past December 10, referring to local employment and the seed capital of S/. 30,000.00.

Despite the confirmation of our commitments, the representatives of the Community demanded the participation of local companies for the intermediation in labor, a situation which is not only no longer a practice carried out by PETROPERU, as it privileges the direct hiring of the local workers, validated by the Communal Assembly, BUT WAS ALSO NEVER AGREED UPON WITH THE COMMUNITY.

It needs to be mentioned that PETROPERU has been carrying out different efforts aimed at strengthening the relations with the Chapis community, which is reflected in the promotion of different dialogue spaces that are being carried out until this moment with the leaders of the community in order to carry out the repair work of the pipeline, containment of the spill, intervention of the supervising entities (Prosecutor’s Office, National Police, OSINERGMIN, OEFA); as well as work visits of a PCM Commission, of Congressman Jorge Melendez and local authorities. In all of these initiatives, the Company has been present, promoting dialogue and the solution of all the requests made by the communal leaders.

In addition, on the past December 28 we participated of the Awakening Smiles campaign, where we gave toys for the children, donated goods for the Christmas “chocolatada” of December 30, for which we also supported with the logistic for the goods donated by Congressman Jorge Melendez and the delivery of construction material for the repair of the roof of the diner of the elementary school N° 62303 of Chapis.

PETROPERU reaffirms its willingness to carry out the efforts needed to reestablish the mutual trust relationship with the Chapis Community and its 5 Annexes and carry out the cleaning and remediation of the affected area in the shortest time possible, fulfilling the commitments made.
