Petroperú demands immediate measures in the face of escalating attacks on the North Peruvian Pipeline

Petroperú confirmed that the spill detected on February 12 in the Putuchip ravine, Nieva district, Condorcanqui province, Amazonas region, was caused by an intentional attack against the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP). The inspection carried out in the area revealed that the pipeline was perforated with a drill-type mechanical tool, and showed evidence of a planned and precisely executed attack.
This is the second attack in less than a week and the twelfth since January 2023 in Section II of the ONP, an alarming situation that compromises the country's energy infrastructure, the environment and the safety of nearby communities.
Preliminary investigations have identified recent excavations in the area of the attack, similar to those found in the attack on February 8. Given the repetition of these events, Petroperú has intensified its legal actions, managing complaints before the competent entities and strengthening coordination with the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Public Prosecutor's Office for the identification and prosecution of those responsible. It has also notified this new attack to regulatory agencies, such as the Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency (Osinergmin), the Environmental Assessment and Oversight Agency (OEFA) and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Matters (FEMA), ensuring compliance with response and oversight protocols.
Given the seriousness of these attacks, Petroperú reiterates its demand that the authorities guarantee the security of this Critical National Asset, emphasizing the need to reinforce the presence of law enforcement and drastically sanction those responsible for these acts that threaten the country's energy security.
While investigations continue, Petroperú has its technical teams deployed in the area to mitigate the environmental impact and guarantee the security of the affected area. It also reaffirms its commitment to continue reporting on the progress of the recovery efforts and the legal actions undertaken.
