PETROPERÚ calls on the amazon community of Chapis to allow an immediate environmental remediation
PETROPERÚ informs the public that the community of Chapis does not allow the start of the remediation works of Km 221, despite the dialogue that has been held at its headquarters:
- After a multisectoral commission of the Executive Power and representatives of PETROPERU visited the native community of Chapis, in Loreto, it was agreed to repair the pipeline for 05 days and set up a Dialogue Table. Both agreements have been fulfilled, having concluded with the repair of the pipeline on November 28 and installed the Dialogue Table which was installed and held on December 1 and 2.
- However, they persist in seriously endangering the health of the population and the environment by not allowing PETROPERÚ to begin cleaning and remediation work, since they condition such work to a daily wage of 250.00 soles and require a new environmental evaluation, ignoring the one already made by the competent authorities, a situation that has been confirmed by the Public Ministry and the National Police of Peru.
- The risk to the health and the environment of the populations is compounded by the delay of the restart of operations of the North Branch Pipeline, which negatively impacts the economic development of the communities and the country and which is reflected in the evident decrease in the canon the Loreto region.
- We urge the Awajun Chapis community to allow us to start the cleaning and remediation tasks of the area as soon as possible, giving priority to their ancestral concern for nature. No claim justifies the postponement of these activities. Any delay in the execution of these actions seriously endangers the health of the neighboring communities and the environment, as well as the safe restart of ONP operations. Let's work together with the development of our Amazon
