Petroperú begins cleaning work at km 390 of the North Peruvian Pipeline
After placing the metal clip that contained the crude oil leak caused by the attack suffered by the pipe of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP) at km 390 of Section II, Petroperú began the recovery of the spilled hydrocarbon and cleaning of the affected area, as part of of the first response actions contemplated in the Contingency Plan.
As recalled, the cut caused to the ONP pipeline occurred on January 18 in the province of Condorcanqui, as part of the measures of force and demonstrations that were generated in the Amazonas region, a situation that worsened with the impediment of entry to Petroperú to attend the event.
It is necessary to clarify that to date it is not possible to determine the amount of crude oil spilled, because a volumetric evaluation must be carried out through the method of restitution of the pipeline's operating conditions. That is to say, when pumping is restarted and the same operating conditions as the pipeline were in before the cut are reached, the volume spilled in this contingency can be determined.
Containment Barriers
The installation of containment barriers is another of the tasks carried out around this event in order to prevent the displacement of hydrocarbons. To date, 22 barriers have been installed along the Chiangos River and the Callamas Creek. All these tasks are being carried out prior coordination with the communal authorities.
Petroperú reiterates its willingness to dialogue to continue with the final repair and cleaning work on the pipeline, urging the residents to stay away from the area of the spill and avoid collecting the oil, since it is a task that requires adequate protection measures.
