PETROPERÚ assumes a commitment against discrimination against the LGBTIQ + community

In line with its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion policy, PETROPERÚ signed the First Declaration of Commitments Pride Connection Peru 2021, which establishes 10 commitments through which it assumes the responsibility of working against discrimination based on orientation sexuality, identity and gender expression during the period 2021-2022.

Along with PETROPERÚ, another 47 Peruvian companies have signed this commitment against discrimination to the LGBTIQ+ community in the country, in a virtual ceremony that included the participation of the United Nations representative in Peru, Igor Garafulic; Edgardo Rodríguez, General Director of Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights; Ralph Jansen, Ambassador of Canada; Jene Thomas, Director in Peru of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and CV Viverito, Deputy Director of Global Programs and Stakeholder Engagement Out & Equal Workplace Advocates.

"As representative of the United Nations in Peru, I can only express my satisfaction that the Principles of Conduct have found an echo in such important companies in Peru and that we have been able to contribute to this process of promotion and protection of human rights", Igor Garafulic expressed.

For his part, Rodrigo Espinoza, representative of Pride Connection Peru, thanked the organizations that are part of the Network and have joined in signing this Declaration of Commitments, which means one more step to continue ensuring respect and value for diversity, as well as free and inclusive spaces for people from the LGBTIQ+ community.

The “Principles of Conduct for Businesses: Fighting Discrimination Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex People” were developed in collaboration with the Institute for Human Rights and Business and are based on the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and incorporate the contributions of hundreds of companies from various sectors.

According to the II National Human Rights Survey of the LGBT population prepared by the Ministry of Justice and IPSOS, more than 1.7 million Peruvians are part of the LGBTIQ+ community. According to this study, in Peru, 71% of people recognize that this community is one of those that suffers the most from discrimination compared to other vulnerable groups.
