North Peruvian Pipeline prepares for El Niño phenomenon
Petroperú has already implemented its contingency plan, in each of its operations, against the announced El Niño Phenomenon, which - according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) - will affect global temperature, causing droughts and floods in various parts of the planet.
Therefore, given the probability of extreme events caused by intense rains, prevention actions have already begun, especially in the North Peruvian Oil Pipeline (ONP), in line with the Disaster Risk Management policy and in compliance with Law No. 29664. – Law of the National Disaster Risk Management System – SINAGERD.
These actions are carried out with the main objective of protecting the integrity of workers, contractor personnel and surrounding communities; as well as protect the facilities that are part of Petroperú's heritage.
For this purpose, the state oil company launched its Emergency Management Committee, in accordance with what is indicated in the ONP Contingency Plan, which is responsible for the implementation of prevention actions, which include -among others- the reinforcement of the protective walls; cleaning of the sector of the Huancabamba river as it passes through Station 9 (Piura region) and cleaning of streams surrounding the stations.
All of this is aimed at avoiding flooding and damage to the equipment in the industrial zone of Station 8 and Station 9, as they are the most vulnerable stations to the natural phenomenon. Likewise, the supply of non-perishable provisions and drinking water will be provided at the western stations and the Bayóvar Terminal, where there will also be health professionals and medical supplies that allow the staff to be cared for.
Petroperú, aware of the scope that this climate phenomenon could bring, is also coordinating joint actions with companies neighboring its operations, thus joining efforts and strengthening its actions, trying to mitigate collateral effects.
