New attack against the North Peruvian Pipeline in Urarinas

The irresponsible attitude of those who cut the pipeline to illegally earn individual profit-at the expense of the health of the population and damage to the Amazon ecosystem-has to be severely punished by the judicial authorities.

We strongly denounce and reject a new attack against the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), which took place yesterday October 22 of 2016, near the Nueva Alianza native community, in the district of Urarinas of Loreto, very near to where the spills of the 55.5 and 52.4 Km of Stretch I of the ONP took place this past August.

This matter, early this morning our technical team placed a prefabricated staple on the duct, where it was damaged by third parties, and in this way, the crude leak is now contained. Likewise, we are working hard in the Sabaloyacu Gorge and the margins of the Marañon River in order to minimize the environmental impact that this new attack might cause.

We regret that this new attack against the ONP continues to be motivated by the improper expectation to obtain economic benefits. Considering that this constitutes a very serious crime, we are once again reporting this event to the competent authorities, demanding the immediate capture and detention of those who are found responsible for this criminal act.

We have made the necessary coordinations with the National Government in order to receive the support of law enforcement agencies to contribute to guarantee the safety of this structure that is strategic to the country.

We also urged the native communities, institutions and public opinion to not let themselves be surprised by those who only seek their personal gain, affecting the environment and the health of the population, as well as strategic assets of the country.
