Native communities block access to station 5 of the North Peruvian Pipeline
PETROPERU informs the public of the following:
- At 22:14 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2020, a group of residents with lances abruptly entered Station 5 of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), Datem del Marañón province, forcing operational personnel to paralyze the crude oil pumping and electricity generation activities.
- These unfortunate events also contravene the health regulations for the prevention of COVID-19, for which the company categorically rejects this measure of force that exposes the protesters, among whom are women and children, not only because of the context of the pandemic but because of the risks involved in entering an industrial zone without the corresponding implements and security measures.
- Their demands on the State, as indicated, are related to the implementation of health and medicine centers to deal with COVID-19; as well as, the closing of social gaps.
- Faced with the imminent risk situation, PETROPERU has opportunely transferred the company's personnel and contractors to a distant space from the industrial zone where the residents remain, in order to safeguard the health and safety of all.
- PETROPERU regrets that this measure of force has interrupted the restart of operations of the ONP, which began the day before, complying with strict security protocols, contemplated in the PETROPERU COVID-19 Surveillance, Prevention and Control Plan. These events impact not only PETROPERU but the hydrocarbon industry in general.
- PETROPERU reiterates its social commitment to the native communities neighboring the ONP, maintaining support for the actions that the State has been implementing to control COVID-19, through the transfer of oxygen cylinders and health brigades for care of the most remote native communities. Likewise, it reports that it has been coordinating with the health authorities the acquisition of an oxygen plant for the province of Datem del Marañón.
- Faced with the above and the health emergency that the country is experiencing, PETROPERU reiterates its invocation to depose this measure of force and to initiate a respectful dialogue with the corresponding authorities, within the framework of the law and the rule of law, for the benefit of the country.
