More than six thousand mothers in the Amazon benefit from a health care project

More than six thousand mothers of families have benefited so far from the messaging project implemented by PETROPERÚ, in alliance with the Regional Directorate of Health - DIRESA Amazonas, and through which they are provided specialized guidance in the prevention and care of health during pregnancy and the first year of life of their children.

This project, which is part of the "Early Childhood and Health" component of PETROPERÚ's Social Management Policy, has been benefiting pregnant women and mothers from the districts of Urarinas (Loreto) and Imaza and Nieva (Amazonas), located in the areas of influence of the North Peruvian Pipeline.

It has a beneficiary registration platform, which allows health personnel to identify the women who are about to give birth, as well as the number of children who should be immunized and undergo height and weight controls. In this way, better monitoring of the indicators of prevention and care of maternal and child health of the beneficiary communities is carried out.

The contents of the messages to pregnant women and mothers of children under one year of age have been prepared, adapted and translated into the Awajún language for dissemination through various formats such as text messages (SMS), voice messages, telephone calls, spots of radio and audios to be broadcast through loudspeakers or the itinerant “peripherals” that are carried out in the communities.

As part of important dissemination material, 364 text message prototypes have been developed in Awajún, 55 audios for voice messages and 24 radio spots, which were broadcast through local radio Kampagkis and communal megaphones.

Likewise, due to the difficult context caused by the pandemic, specific messages for the prevention of COVID-19 have been developed, in order to permanently remind families and vulnerable populations of the care for the prevention of said disease.

To date, a total of 6,436 beneficiaries from the three intervention districts have been registered, through the sending of 734,835 messages, of which 92% were in Spanish and 8% in Awajún.

Staff training

The role of the professionals of the health networks is fundamental for the proper development of this project, for this reason 88 workers of the Nieva and Imaza Health networks, who belong to the DIRESA Amazonas, and 25 workers of the Urarinas Health Network and the Executive Directorate of the Intercultural Health Center -CENSI in Loreto.

As part of its social commitment, PETROPERÚ has a key role in the areas of influence of its operations, where it has developed various actions in support of the fight against COVID-19. In the town of Saramiriza, province of Datem del Marañón, a medicinal oxygen plant has been installed that has been attending to the health needs of the native communities near the ONP; among many other actions.
