Mechanical damage by cutting causes five latest crude leaks

In regards to the environmental event reported on Friday, October 14, 2016, in the 84+460 Km of Stretch I of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), would have to report the following:

The crude leak is controlled and contained

  • The spilled crude is contained above the flotation canal and has not affected the reverse and/or streams of the area, as were the other leaks reported in previous months in the district of Urarinas. On this matter, the Specialized Prosecutor on Environmental Matters of Yurimaguas will arrive today Thursday, October 20 to the 6 de Julio Native Community, where the latest crude leak occurred.
  • In order to carry out the judicial diligence the collaboration of the Apu of the 6 de Julio Native Community and of the population will be available, in order to begin the cleaning and containment works of the spilt leak due to this new attack against the ONP as soon as possible. In that sense, a Commission from PETROPERU was in the community on Tuesday, October 18, initiating a cordial dialogue process so that the technical team can reinforce the containment barriers for the crude contained in the flotation canal, which was done satisfactorily.

Improper and irresponsible interests affect the health of the population and the ecosystem

  • We reject the irresponsible attitude of those who are making cuts in the ONP in order to generate individual benefits, because with their improper actions they are affecting the health of the population and damaging the ecosystem of the Amazonas and Loreto regions.

A new attitude

  • A team from PETROPERU is already working on the Amazonas and Loreto regions, opening the doors for dialogue with the native communities and federations that are in the influence zone of the ONP, in order to implement the Program “Guardians of the Pipeline”, which includes three pillars: maintaining the right-of-way to the ONP, security and vigilance brigades, as well as training for environmental monitoring. Conversations with some communities to sign the respective agreements are already underway.
  • Likewise, PETROPERU is already executing a social development plan that will contribute to improving the quality of life of the communities in the surroundings of the ONP, at the same time generating efficient and effective multi-actor dialogue spaces.

About the ONP

  • The ONP has not pumped crude since the past February 16.
  • The ONP flotation canal is an artificial facility built to house the pipeline and works as a barrier to contain the crude in case of a leak, as has happened in the recent events. Additionally, it has security plugs that prevent the crude from moving to reverse and/or creeks.
