In less than 5 days, a new attack against the North Peruvian Pipeline

In the early hours of today, Wednesday, February 12, traces of hydrocarbons were detected in the Putuchip ravine, located at kilometer 385+727 of Section II of the Norperuano Oil Pipeline (ONP), in the district of Nieva, province of Condorcanqui, Amazonas region. In light of this probable new attack, Petroperú immediately activated its contingency plan to contain and mitigate the impact.
The personnel deployed to the area proceeded to install containment barriers and carry out first response activities. The preliminary assessment indicates that this would be a deliberate attack by third parties against the ONP infrastructure, since recent excavations have been found in the area, similar to those found in the attack recorded on February 8.
Petroperú has initiated legal action, managing complaints before the competent entities and coordinating with the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Public Prosecutor's Office to verify and prosecute those responsible. Likewise, it demands that the corresponding regulatory entities, such as the Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency (Osinergmin), the Environmental Assessment and Oversight Agency (OEFA) and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Matters (FEMA), be informed about this act of vandalism, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
This is the second attack against the ONP in less than a week and adds to the other 11 attacks recorded between January 2023 and March 2024 in Section II of the ONP, which has been shut down since July 12, 2024 due to low crude inventories at Station 5.
In light of this repeated situation, Petroperú demands that the authorities take urgent action to protect this critical national asset, whose operation is essential for the country's energy supply. The Commission also reaffirms its commitment to protecting the environment and the safety of neighbouring communities, pledging to provide timely information on progress in mitigation efforts and investigations related to this new attack.
