Full operation of the New Talara Refinery begins

With the presence of the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, the Minister of Energy and Mines (MINEM), Oscar Vera, and the President of the Board of Directors of PETROPERÚ, Pedro Chira, the New Talara Refinery (NRT) began its full operation. The modern refining complex, since its start-up stage, has been producing fuels of the highest quality to supply the national market.

The president highlighted the importance for the country of the implementation of the NRT, describing the event as a "historic day in terms of energy and hydrocarbons. This work is already a reality and definitely full of pride for all Peruvians," he said.

"The new Talara Refinery represents the largest development pole in the country and will promote the call for new investments and strengthen our energy security, generating opportunities for the repowering of the hydrocarbon sector," he added.

In turn, the head of the MINEM, Oscar Vera, highlighted the benefits for Peru that the modern refining complex will bring, which he described as "first level" and which, he said, will promote greater dynamism for the economy not only of the region but for the entire country.

The president of the Board of Directors of PETROPERÚ, Pedro Chira, highlighted the human potential of part of the staff of the state oil company. "The company has enough experience to manage not only the new and modern refinery but also to make the oil lots productive," he said.

He added that the NRT has enormous potential in terms of profitability and, without a doubt, "will constitute a fundamental contribution to substantially improve the financial situation of the company".

It should be noted that the commissioning of the NRT ended with the stabilization of processes of the Flexicoking Unit, which has the ability to process residual inputs turning them into top quality products of very high value. In addition, the NRT will generate strategic value for the hydrocarbon industry, as it will process heavy crudes from the oil lots of the jungle.

Likewise, the NRT contributes to the country's energy policy by increasing its processing capacity by 45%, from 65,000 to 95,000 barrels per day. In this way, a reduction in the import of fuels will be achieved, with a gradual positive impact on the trade balance of the hydrocarbon sector.

This modern refinery will reduce the sulfur content in fuels to 50 parts per million, to meet environmental standards. This reduction will allow an improvement in air quality, as well as a reduction in health expenses due to respiratory diseases for all Peruvians.

Regarding its safe and reliable operation, the NRT has a distributed control system (automation and process control), a safety instrumented system with closed circuit television, fire and gas system, fixed and mobile firefighting system, a new firefighting station and five mobile firefighting units that support the operation to be reliable, taking care of the environment, personnel and assets of the NRT.

The NRT is the most important energy megaproject in the country. It has 16 process units and five packages of auxiliary units and complementary services, two liquid loading docks and 125 storage tanks.

Northwest Lots

PETROPERÚ operates the Northwest I, VI and Z-69 oil lots, fulfilling its commitment to maintain sustained production in these three lots, as it has experienced personnel, which allows it to produce part of the raw material that is processed in the NRT. The three lots maintain an average production of 7,200 barrels of oil per day.

As part of the oil contracts, PETROPERÚ maintains its commitment to increase production in these lots, thus generating greater job opportunities for the north of the country and operating in strict compliance with the contract, with social and environmental responsibility.
