The New Talara Refinery, the most important energy project in the country, attracted the attention and interest of the public participating in the 35th edition of PERUMIN, the second largest mining convention in the world, which has been taking place this week in the convention center Cerro Juli in the city of Arequipa.

During the presentation of the keynote speech "New Talara Refinery, maximum efficiency in the production of fuels for the care of the environment", the president of the Board of Directors of Petroperú, Eng. Humberto Campodónico Sánchez, informed the PERUMIN attendees of the importance of This engineering work is undergoing start-up tests for its next commissioning, in the last quarter of this year, producing higher quality and environmentally friendly fuels.

With the start-up of the New Talara Refinery, Petroperú will ensure the supply of better-quality fuels and lower sulfur content to the mining sector, which will help companies in this important sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

He specified that the modern refining complex of Petroperú has increased its production capacity from 65,000 to 95,000 barrels of oil per day, processing national and international raw material, as they do in other nations of the world that have little or no oil production. "There are many countries that do not have crude oil and do have refineries, such as Spain, the Netherlands or South Korea," he added during his presentation.

Campodónico Sánchez indicated that the New Talara Refinery will be one of the most modern deep conversion refineries in Latin America, as it will have state-of-the-art process units, among which the Flexicoking unit stands out, waste conversion technology that maximizes liquid yields and minimizes the production of residuals and coke, this being the ninth unit with this technology patented by ExxonMobil that is put into service in the world.

The New Talara Refinery has 16 process units and five packages of auxiliary units and complementary services, two liquid loading docks, 21 new storage tanks, a modern laboratory with international certification to guarantee the quality of its products and a new fire-fighting station. among other facilities that will provide facilities for the new refining complex.

Recovering trust

Campodónico Sánchez reported that they have been working on strengthening the company's confidence and guaranteeing its financial sustainability, through a series of actions that have been carried out after overcoming the impasses generated during the previous administration.

In this regard, he reported that the Board of Directors approved a proposed bill for the strengthening and appointment of its directors, with the aim of accrediting the competencies of its members, limiting the high turnover of this instance of the Company, establishing the conditions of removal of its members, increase the number of independent directors, regulate management periods, specify the characteristics of the selection process of its members and the impediments of its members, among other points; all based on objective criteria and through transparent and auditable procedures. The proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Energy and Mines for evaluation.

Likewise, he highlighted the obtaining of the audited financial statements for the year 2021 with a favorable opinion, which contributes to generating trust among its main stakeholders and overcoming the reputational crisis that had been affecting the company.

He pointed out that Petroperú has prioritized the upcoming commissioning and start of commercial operation of the New Talara Refinery and continuing with the progressive return to oil production activity in the country, which will guarantee the raw material for its modern complex. refining, having participation in the northwest lots.
