Diego Trelles Paz and Santiago Merino win the 2016 Copé Oro Award organized by PETROPERU
  • Diego Trelles won the Copé Oro Award of the XIX Essay Biennial, with a prize of S/. 45 thousand with the work on the alternative police novel in Latin America.
  • Santiago Merino won the Copé Oro Award of the XIX Story Biennial, with a prize of S/.35 thousand, with his story “The Marylin painting”.
  • The award ceremony will take place on December 6 in PETROPERU.

The writer Diego Trelles Paz was the winner of the “2016 Copé Award” of the V Essay Biennial, organized by PETROPERU, which has a price of 45 thousand Soles for the first place, with the work “Detectives lost in the dark city. Alternative police novel in Latin America. From Borges a Bolaño”.

At the same time, the story “The Marylin painting”, by Santiago Merino Acevedo, was the winner of the Copé Oro Award of the XIX Story Biennial, with a prize of 35 thousand Soles. The Copé Plata Award for this category went to the story “Santeros”, by María Lourdes Torres Saric, while the work “That little light on the window ” by Miguel Ángel Torres Vitolas, earned the Copé Bronce Award of the XIX Biennial. The winners of the Plata and Bronce categories will receive prizes of 25 thousand and 15 thousand, respectively.

The jury of the V Essay Biennial decided to grant the Copé Oro Award to Trelles for “covering the peculiarity with which Latin American literary creation appropriates a genre born in English tradition and transforms it”. About the work, the jury mentions: “it establishes a singular relationship with the social context, favoring the active participation of the reader, until it is turned into a true detective”.

It can be mentioned that the essay “Emancipated: Feminisms and identities in the Hispanic or construction of the Independence (Briceño, Puga y Sotomayor)”, by Mariana Libertad Suárez, was rewarded with the Honorific Mention by the jury.

As for the story “The Marylin painting”, the jury of the XIX Story Biennial granted it the first place because “by having been written with intensity and affection of a true friendship, the winning story recovers dramatically the final days of a renowned Peruvian painter. Technically efficient, the story allows us to enter the intimacy of the characters and refers situations tied to artistic creation and the suffering condition of the creator”.

In the case of “Santeros”, by María Lourdes Torres Saric, the decision of the jury to grant her the second place is based on “this tight and fluid story covers the topic of violence from a realistic perspective not exempt from magical resonances. It is remarkable for the agile and precise penmanship with which the characters are configured and by the tension that is applied to the development of the intrigue is quote.

Finally, “That little light on the window” by Miguel Ángel Torres Vitolas, air and the Copé Bronce “for a narrative proposal that develops honesty and subtlety the difficult and painful but at the same time hopeful relationship of the family in crisis. Starting with the metaphor of a model of the house, this story weaves with simplicity applauded in which the silences are more eloquent than what is being said is quote.

Meanwhile, the works “New Year in Madrid”, by George Clarke Paliza; “You will never stop seeing my eyes”, by Frederick O´Brien Berenguel; and “They’re taking everything”, by Carlos Alejandro Zambrano Pérez, received honorific mentions in the XIX Story Biennial.

The V Essay Biennial and the XIX Story Biennial “2016 Copé Award” open for submissions in January 2016 and closed it on August 12 of the same year. 59 works participated in the V Essay Biennial and 1,428 stories in the XIX Story Biennial.

According to the rules of the contest, the winning essay and a book that will be an anthology of the winners of the Oro, Plata, Bronce, honorific mentions and finalists will be published. The winners will receive, in addition to a cash prize, a trophy and a diploma. The case of honorific mentions and finalists for both genres they will receive a diploma.
The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 6 at 7:30 PM, in the Auditorium of PETROPERU (Av. Enrique Canaval Moreyra 150, San Isidro), date in which the request for submissions for the 2017 Copé Awards will also be announced.

In this edition of the 2016 Copé Award, the Jury of the XIX Story Biennial was composed of Guillermo Niño de Guzmán (Ministry of Culture), Harry Belevan-McBride Peruvian Language Academy), Jorge Valenzuela (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos), Giovanna Pollarolo (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) and Pedro Cateriano Delgado (PETROPERU).

Meanwhile, the Jury of the V Story Biennial was composed of Patricia Ruiz Bravo (Ministry of Culture), Salomón Lerner Febres (Peruvian Language Academy), Marco Martos, (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos), Alexandra Hibbett (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) and Ricardo González Vigil (PETROPERU).

Petroleos del Peru and the Evaluating Juries highlight the great number of submissions of works for both genres and the high quality of the selected works. Likewise, they would like to thank all the participants for their dedication to the literary creation, and urge them to continue participating in the «2017 Copé Award».
