Construction of the New Talara Refinery is carried out under strict biosafety protocols
Given recent information about the increase in COVID-19 cases in the Talara Refinery Modernization Project (PMRT), PETROPERÚ addresses the public opinion to communicate the following:
- Peru and the world are experiencing a new wave of COVID-19 contagion, of greater magnitude than the previous one, produced by new strains that are characterized by a greater speed of contagion.
- That is why the health authorities have asked to reinforce preventive measures, such as avoiding crowds, visits and numerous meetings, maintaining a physical distance of 2 meters, the correct use of masks and constant hand washing.
- These sanitary measures are strictly observed in all the work fronts and facilities of the Company. In addition to many other measures, such as the permanent use of renewable biosafety equipment, daily review and disinfection of vehicles and environments, redesign of the traffic flows of people in closed spaces, among others.
- That is why the percentage of positive cases in workers is relatively low - it is in the order of 2.7% - and it is treated following the health protocols established to prevent the spread of COVID-19; that is, they are kept on medical rest, complying with quarantine, keeping social distancing and following medical recommendations for their recovery.
- PETROPERÚ regrets and rejects the alarmist versions according to which 70% of the PMRT workers are infected. This irresponsible information does not conform to the truth and lacks support, but, above all, it does not help control the disease or the tranquility of the population in the midst of this serious health crisis.
- The health and safety of its workers and those of the contractor companies are the first priority for PETROPERÚ. That is why the Company reiterates its commitment to complete this last stage of construction of the new Talara Refinery, which is 94.13% complete, rigorously and responsibly executing the surveillance, prevention and control plans of the PMRT, the same that are registered in the Integrated System for COVID-19 (SISCOVID-19) of the Ministry of Health, in accordance with the provisions of the Executive for the resumption of economic activities in the country.
- Likewise, it calls on the authorities and opinion leaders of Talara to provide information responsibly in order to avoid confusion in the population on sensitive issues such as public health. In this sense, PETROPERÚ reiterates its availability to meet public information requirements with transparency.
- Finally, PETROPERÚ calls on the population to maintain and maximize the basic preventive measures to avoid the spread of the disease, especially during the mandatory social immobilization of the long Easter holiday. May these days be a reason for unity and family gathering, as well as solidarity with all the homes that have lost their loved ones due to the pandemic.
