Community of Mayuriaga persists on preventing the repairs of the North Peruvian Pipeline

PETROPERU addresses the public opinion to report the following:

  1. For 22 days, the leaders of the community of Mayuriaga, in the district of Morona, Datem del Marañón province, Loreto, persist in preventing the repair of the North Branch of the North Peruvian Pipeline. This is after on Saturday, December 15, a delegation from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and PETROPERU was allowed access to repair the pipeline.
  2. At this meeting, 18 representative officials from various sectors of the State and the Company spoke with the community about their demands. It should be noted that the representatives of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Energy and Mines and PETROPERU have maintained a permanent willingness to dialogue with the community, which has manifested itself in previous work coordinations.
  3. Despite this, the authorities of that community persisted in preventing the repair of the pipeline, with serious risk to the environment, raising new demands; among them the hiring of their local company to execute the cleaning and remediation tasks of the affected area, even though they themselves cut the infrastructure, so the demand openly violates the Company's practices.
  4. It is worth remembering that since November 27 the operation of the North Branch Pipeline has been suspended, affecting the national oil production due to an attack carried out by a group of leaders of the community of Mayuriaga. Initially the aforementioned leaders claimed to be dissatisfied with the results of the municipal elections in their district; threatening in writing to break the pipeline, which they then carried out.
  5. The above reveals that the leaders of this community explicitly use damage to infrastructure and environmental damage as instruments of pressure. This without measuring the serious risk to their own health and the preservation of the environment. But, in addition, they are causing damage to the economy of the region, the country and the industry. The attacks against the Pipeline harm us all and under the current legal framework, they must be punished by the corresponding authorities.
  6. PETROPERU reaffirms its invocation to the leaders of the community of Mayuriaga to allow the immediate repair of the pipeline with the purpose of mitigating the serious social, environmental and economic risks that they represent for the country, from which it will be possible to continue the dialogue to identify alternatives to support local development and improve the quality of life of the community.
