Awajun communities implement plant nurseries for the production of cocoa
The Ikam Kiutamat productive project, which means "let's conserve our forests" is one of the most representative initiatives that Petroperú carries out for the benefit of the communities near the North Peruvian Oil Pipeline (ONP), as it seeks for the population to improve their quality of life with the cultivation and sale of cocoa.
There are eighty Awajun families participating in this project, located in the district of Nieva, Condorcanqui province, Amazonas region, which belong to the Tayuntsa, Nueva Unida, Najaím Paraíso and Alto Pajakuts native communities.
The beneficiaries, who have been receiving constant training from agroforestry experts for months, have now managed to optimally implement and maintain eighty nurseries, in which a thousand cocoa and one hundred Tornillo and Capirona seedlings are being developed, forest species that are essential for the entire sowing process.
Subsequently, these seedlings will be transplanted into their permanent field, which would achieve the first goal of installing eighty hectares of cocoa under agroforestry systems that apply soil conservation practices to guarantee optimal growth.
The project has a duration of four years, during which support, advice, technical and financial assistance will be provided at the different stages of cultivation. In addition, it contemplates aspects of organization and creation of associations under a business and commercial vision, in order to achieve sustainability.
In this way, Petroperú seeks to generate a productive impact alongside the communities surrounding its operations, working closely as strategic partners and following the guidelines of its social management policy, which aims to establish participatory mechanisms that directly benefit the population of the community.
