Authorities verified intentional cuts to the North Peruvian Pipeline in the Loreto region
Personnel from the National Police of Peru arrived in the vicinity of kilometer 43+106 and kilometer 43+499 of Section I of the North Peruvian Pipeline (ONP), in the area surrounding the Nueva Santa Rosa native community, district of Urarinas, Loreto province and region, and was able to verify the intentional cuts made by third parties on the 2nd of this month.
After the inspection carried out by the police officers, Petroperú workers and representatives of the Nueva Santa Rosa and Urarinas native communities, it was verified that in the vicinity of kilometer 43+106 the length of the cut is 25 centimeters, while in the vicinity of kilometer 43+499 the cut reaches 16 centimeters.
During the official procedure, personnel from the oil company placed metal clips to seal the two cuts made with a mechanical tool and that caused the leak of crude oil, which has been contained in the ONP flotation channel. Likewise, more containment barriers were placed in the area, thus preventing the hydrocarbon from moving outside that artificial installation.
Petroperú reported in a timely manner the event to the competent authorities, such as the Public Ministry, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), the Supervisory Body for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin), the Environmental Evaluation and Oversight Body (OEFA) , the General Directorate of Hydrocarbons of MINEM, the Headquarters of the Loreto Macro Region and to the captaincies of Ports and Coast Guard of Iquitos, Yurimaguas and Maypuco.
The company reiterates the call to stop these attacks that not only impact the environment but also the communities and their surroundings. From December 2021 to date, there have already been 15 attacks with more than 50 intentional cuts, most of which have been registered in Section I. Likewise, it calls on the authorities to expedite the investigation processes to find those responsible of these criminal acts that threaten the development of the Amazon and the country.
